Time & Direction
03:10

I can feel the delicate balance shifting.
The brass pan scales are starting to quiver.
And every single letter that we stitched into our skin
has faded now like your memory.
And I swore on the greatest city skylines
that we’d make it through the year if it killed us.
And the lights above the corner, cascading down your face,
they would carry us halfway across the world.
And I promised her I could love her again
like at 17, lying on my bedroom floor
dropping darts through foreign maps in magazines.
And how many times did we tear ourselves wide open?
within the walls, inside the house with the lights out
and said we already felt the zephyrs.
And I swore on the greatest city skylines
that we’d make it through the year if it killed us.
And the lights above the corner, heavier than all the concrete,
Crashing down, down, down.
We tried reviving something that we lost somewhere out there.
Cause we were so tall; we were more than this and we’d never be torn down.
We tried reminding ourselves that the distance was just time and direction.
But your head started turning, and I could that there was someone on your mind.

Heavy Lights
03:58
|
|||
I always thought that we'd outgrow these things:
parties with ghostly smoke,
where the music’s loud and breaking down the walls.
And I barely recall crooked walks home,
just grasping at your sleeve.
And I wanted to take you away from here.
Back to suburban streets
where we spent our lives chasing down the sun.
And I told you everything on the front porch
when you said that you were tired,
and there was nothing left to save.
So I followed heavy lights back home,
and I followed heavy lights back home.
You always said they were the stars that we could own.
They’re the stars that we could own.
I wonder if you’ve met someone by now,
out at those Friday parties that you lived for,
and always raved about.
Where the kids trip on some stuff
and over bodies passed out on the floor,
laughing saying, “Maybe just one more.”
You’ll wake up some early weekend morning,
when the lights stab your eyes
and every noise twists and turns your stomach.
And you’ll scramble for clothes turned inside out,
your heart: excited and confused.

Older Now
03:30
|

I sat at the corner of the parking lot.
I watched our city burn down.
Nothing here but silence,
and I was struggling to breathe.
And everything was dying.
You called sometime around 3AM.
I could hardly hear you over the party.
You were stuck at some house on Ellsworth,
You were sorry for calling so late.
You were sorry for everything.
You said you were older now,
But I got older too.
Heard a crack in your voice through the static.
Said you lost too many friends to this.
I was thumbing a photo of us on Halloween.
God, your hair was longer then.
You said you were older now,
but I got older too.

Steady Ground
04:02
|

I remember every night we spent outside
hanging down from monkey bars for hours.
I can’t even count how many times
we fell asleep upside down.
And I swear that winter never came.
We stood higher than every city tower.
You were gonna leave this all behind,
and you asked me to run with you.
And I couldn’t wait to take you all across the world.
Our contrails would weave tattoos across the sky.
But it was an endless summer parade
that eventually took you away.
I always found you at the top of an iron bridge,
staring down at the swells wild blue waves,
thinking about money and fear and time.
You said it didn’t look that far down.
But I swore, “We could handle nights like these,
even if this winter never breaks.”
We had gotten older now,
and I promised that we would stay balanced.
And I couldn’t wait to take you all across the world.
Our contrails would weave tattoos across the sky.
My knuckles white on the steering wheel,
I followed all those highway signs.
Till I found you stepping over the guardrail…
You stood at the edge of all the world,
And you asked me to jump with you.
And I saw you careening down from steady ground
because I chose stability instead.
